The Project
This project involved the creation and implementation of a visual identity for Mark of the Ancients, a deathcore project released on Maplejack Records in 2026. It included a custom logo built from scratch, paired with front and back cover artwork developed in collaboration with concept artist Brad Ward.
Logo
The core of this project was building a logo that could carry the weight of the genre. It needed to be something heavy, sharp, and legible, which is a very fine line that many metal bands must walk. I hand-drew a custom wordmark from scratch, working through multiple rounds of letterform adjustments to get the balance between aggression and readability right.
Cover Art
From there, the identity extended into the album's front and back cover artwork, developed with the band and concept artist Brad Ward. The most interesting challenge was translating the original concept into a collaborative piece while maintaining a cohesive final package, making sure the logo, typography, and imagery all read as one unified system rather than separate pieces bolted together. The back cover extends the same broken city from the front, continuing its collapse across the spread in the same colour palette. Distortion effects tie the two halves together, helping bridge the gap from one cover straight into the other. Interestingly, this was actually the first piece completed in the whole process. The rest of the artwork and identity were built outward from the mood it set.
